Welcome to
Runs with Wolves Sanctuary
Wolf Rescue and Education
The Wolf Song will culminate in a performance planned in a large, custom-designed, indoor-outdoor space at the Maine Studios in
Portland.

Script will weave wolf research and wolf-centered legend and literature with poetry, theater and song.
Portland composer and theater sound director Barb Truex will direct the musical collaboration on strings, percussion,
bells and voice.
Drama and dance will bring the script to life through a visual background of archetypal animal masks, puppets and
evocative nature-based sets.
Audience members will enter the performance space through a tunnel as if descending into a wolf-den.  The event will
culminate in an interactive ritual to honor the wolf.

About two months after the performance, an installation and discussion will bring the Wolf Song Project back to the community.

An extensive multimedia exhibit of photographs, audio, video, and memorabilia connected with the project will be
installed in a local gallery space.
A discussion will bring Runs With Wolves staff, scientists, other leading wolf preservationists, and community members
together with artist-participants to discuss the wolf in Maine.
Runs With Wolves Sanctuary announces its collaboration with
The Wolf Song Project, an innovative multi-disciplinary theater and education project
taking place in Portland in 2010 and 2011.
The Wolf Song Project brings together the work of 14 actors, visual
artists, ritual-makers, mask-makers and puppeteers, as well as arts
educators.

Wolf Song will use the multiple resources of art, education, theater,
poetry and community outreach to raise awareness of the ecological and
cultural importance of wolves in the human world and the situation of
contemporary wolves in Maine.

The project has five parts:

Community interviews, research and focus groups about wolves
Multimedia, interactive performance of The Wolf Song
Children's theater workshop on wolves following the performance
Installation of puppets, audio, etc. from the performance at a
local gallery
Panel discussion and community forum about Maine wolves

Runs With Wolves’ appreciation for the spiritual, aesthetic and cultural importance, as well as the ecological and biological importance of
wolves, finds expression in the spirit and goals of the Wolf Song Project.
Wolf Song collaborators will work closely with the staff of Runs With
Wolves, meeting the animals, getting feedback on the project and
reaching out to the community together through the panel and
community discussion and other education activities.  An important goal
of the Wolf Song Project is to raise awareness among the public about
the work, mission and needs of Runs With Wolves Sanctuary.
